Le Roy, a village in Genesee County in western New York, appears in this 1892 bird's-eye view when its economy rested mainly on farming and the small shops that served the surrounding countryside. The county's fertile fields produced grain, fruit and dairy goods that moved by rail and wagon to larger markets such as Rochester and Buffalo. Local mineral springs drew visitors seeking health cures, and the hotel and bathing trade gave the village a reputation beyond its size. Its most famous product was still years away, since the gelatin dessert later sold as Jell-O was developed in Le Roy in the late 1890s. In 1892, residents knew their town for its farms, churches, schools and civic life.
