New York in 1892 was a city of well over a million people, and the Manhattan on this bird's-eye view was packed densely from the East River to the Hudson. On January 1 that year the federal government opened the immigration station on Ellis Island in the upper harbor, replacing Castle Garden at the Battery as the place where steamship passengers were examined. Liners arriving from Liverpool, Hamburg and Bremen brought thousands of newcomers each week, many bound for jobs in garment shops, cigar workshops and the building trades. That October the city joined the national observance of the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus's landfall, with parades and ceremonies that drew crowds to the streets. For residents, the city meant crowded tenements, the busy harbor and a steady stream of arrivals coming ashore at the piers.
