Shortsville, in Ontario County in western New York, was a small rural village in 1892, set among the farms and orchards that stretched between the Finger Lakes and the Erie Canal country. Its economy rested on agriculture: dairy herds, grain, and the fruit and grape growing that marked much of the lake region. Railroad service linked the village to nearby markets and to larger towns such as Canandaigua and Rochester, letting farmers ship produce and bring in goods. Residents would have known Shortsville as a quiet, close-knit community whose churches, schools, and local businesses served the surrounding countryside, a place where the pace of life followed the seasons more than the factory whistle.
