Valley Stream, in the Town of Hempstead on central Long Island, was in 1924 a community in transition from farmland to commuter suburb. Its position on the Long Island Rail Road gave residents a direct link to Brooklyn and Manhattan, and through the 1920s the fields and small truck farms that had long defined the area gave way to new house lots laid out for families who worked in the city. The stream that gave the community its name still ran through low ground, and the rising demand for homes meant that drainage, roads, and water supply were constant concerns for local residents and town officials. Nassau County was growing quickly, and people in Valley Stream would have measured their town against the bigger changes reshaping the island around them.
