Utica, New York, in 1873 was a mill city on the Mohawk River, where the Erie Canal and the main line of the New York Central Railroad ran side by side through the valley. Its factories made woolen and knit goods, along with other textiles, and the work drew a steady stream of laborers from England, Wales, Ireland, and Germany. Residents of the day knew the city as a manufacturing and transportation center in the Mohawk Valley, with its growth tied closely to the canal and the rail lines that moved goods east and west. A bird's-eye view from this period shows that dense mix of downtown blocks, church spires, and factory yards, all laid out along the river.
