New York in 1873 was still growing fast, with the 1870 census counting 942,000 residents across Manhattan and the surrounding wards. In September the collapse of Jay Cooke and Company, the Philadelphia banking house that had financed railroad building, set off a financial panic that closed the New York Stock Exchange for more than a week and unsettled Wall Street. Factories and shipping firms downtown cut back, and unemployed workers gathered in large numbers in the city's public squares. Two years after the fall of the Tweed Ring, reformers still argued over city government, while the Grand Central Depot on Fourth Avenue, opened in 1871, showed how railroads were drawing business uptown.
