Troy, New York, in 1881 was a Hudson River city of more than 50,000 people, with its wealth built on making things rather than on trade alone. Iron works such as the Burden plant turned out horseshoes and iron goods, while the city's collar and cuff shops were so numerous that Troy became known as "Collar City." Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1824, gave the town a reputation for engineering that sat comfortably beside its mills and foundries. Railroads on both sides of the river carried freight and workers between the factories, the docks, and the markets farther south and west. Residents would have known Troy as an industrial river town, proud of its laundries, ironmasters, and technically trained engineers.
