Philmont, in the Harlem Valley of Columbia County, New York, was a small rural village in 1881, set among dairy farms and orchards that supplied milk, butter, and produce to markets downstate. The railroad through the valley gave farmers a way to ship their goods to New York City, and it tied the village's fortunes to the larger rhythms of the region's agriculture. Like most villages of its size, Philmont's civic life centered on its churches, schools, and local businesses, with residents largely known to one another across the surrounding countryside. The bird's-eye view captures a community in which farming and the railway defined daily life, at a time when the Hudson Valley counties were still largely rural and oriented toward the river and the rail lines that carried their goods outward.
