In 1899, Plattsburgh was a Lake Champlain town of about ten thousand people, and the Saranac River that runs through it powered mills and factories along its banks. The State Normal School, opened in the early 1890s to train teachers for New York's classrooms, had become one of the town's best-known institutions and drew students from across the state. Summer visitors heading into the Adirondacks often passed through on their way north, so hotels and boarding houses along the lake did a brisk seasonal business. A bird's-eye view from this moment shows a town whose streets, church spires, and school grounds were laid out for a community that expected steady growth into the new century.
