Yonkers, New York, in 1899 was a fast-growing river city on the Hudson, shaped by its carpet and textile mills, brickworks, and the factories along the Saw Mill River. The Alexander Smith & Sons Carpet Company was among the largest employers, and its workforce, many of them immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and Germany, helped swell the population past 30,000 by the end of the century. Trolley lines and the New York Central and Hudson River railroads tied the city to Manhattan, making it a commuter and industrial suburb at once. The city had been chartered in 1872 and was still settling questions of streets, water, and public works that came with rapid growth. A bird's-eye view like this one showed residents a city they recognized as both a working mill town and a rising neighbor of New York.
