West Chazy, New York, in 1899 was a farming hamlet in the town of Chazy, in Clinton County near Lake Champlain in the state's far northeast. Dairy farming and the sale of milk and cheese dominated the surrounding countryside, and the nearby quarries, which gave the Chazy limestone its name in geology, provided stone and steady work. Like many North Country communities, West Chazy relied on rail connections to move farm goods to market and on the county seat at Plattsburgh for courts, banks and wholesale trade. Residents would have known the village mainly as a quiet crossroads of churches, schools, small stores and farms, with daily life shaped by the seasons and the price of dairy products.
