Wildwood Lake Park, New York, in this 1903 bird's-eye view, was a land development promoted by the Seaside Villa Homes Company, which sold house lots to families looking for a home outside the crowded city. By 1903 the New York area was expanding quickly, since Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island had joined Manhattan in the consolidated city in 1898, and suburban railroads carried commuters farther from the tenements. Developers of such tracts typically laid out curving streets, a lake, and open ground to make distant plots look like country retreats within reach of the city. The buyers were mostly clerks, shopkeepers, and tradesmen hoping for cleaner air and a yard of their own, and the promise of a lakeside setting was the main selling point.
