Waverly, New York, sat in the Susquehanna valley near the Pennsylvania line in 1881, and its fortunes were tied closely to the Erie Railroad, whose main line ran through the village and whose yards and shops gave steady work to local men. Freight, passenger traffic and the railroad's payroll drew new residents, and the village grew up around the depot, hotels and stores that served travelers and crews. Surrounding farms and the lumber trade of the region supplied much of the local commerce. Residents would have known Waverly first as a railroad town, with its churches, schools and commercial blocks arranged around the rhythm of the tracks. The view shows the village spread across the river flats and the hillsides above, laid out for a community that had come to depend on the trains.
