Waterville, New York, in 1885 was a village in Oneida County, set among dairy farms and small mills in the central part of the state. Its prospects depended on the railroads serving the region, which carried milk, cheese, lumber, and farm goods to larger markets such as Utica and Syracuse. Like many villages of its size, Waterville relied on a handful of local manufacturers, churches, schools, and a downtown of brick storefronts, and residents judged progress by new jobs and better rail connections. This bird's-eye view shows the streets, rooftops, and open lots that a resident of that decade would have recognized as the everyday shape of a community built on farming and trade.
