Potsdam, New York, in 1885 was a village of brick and sandstone streets in St. Lawrence County, close to the Canadian border and the Raquette River. Its economy rested on farming and dairy, with cheese and milk moving out by rail, alongside the mills and workshops that drew power from the river. The local red sandstone, the rock that gave the Potsdam geological formation its name, was quarried and cut for building, and stone from the district went into structures well beyond the village. The State Normal School, which trained teachers and gave the village a steady population of students and faculty, shaped its civic and social life, with churches, lectures, and school events marking the calendar. Residents of the period would have known Potsdam first as a college and quarry town set among the farms of the North Country.
