Weedsport, a village in Cayuga County, New York, sat along the Erie Canal in 1885, about midway between Syracuse and Auburn. Its economy rested on the canal's grain, lumber, and farm-produce traffic, supplemented by the railroads that by then ran through the county and linked local farms to larger markets. Surrounding Cayuga County was among the state's most productive agricultural areas, so the village's grain elevators, warehouses, and mills served the farm families who drove their wagons into town on market days. Residents would have known Weedsport as a canal and farm-trade town of modest size, where churches, schools, and small businesses lined the streets and the towpath marked the rhythm of daily commerce.
