Richfield Springs, in Otsego County in central New York, was a summer resort in 1885, built around its mineral springs. Visitors came from the cities of the Northeast to take the waters, stay in large hotels, and spend the warm months on verandas and shaded walks. The village also served the surrounding farm country, where dairy herds, hay, and grain were the main sources of income for families who sold through local markets and rail connections. Most residents would have known the place first as a health resort, and its season ran from late spring into early autumn, when the hotels were full and the streets were busiest.
