Saratoga Springs in 1888 remained a resort town at heart, its summer season drawing visitors to the mineral springs while bottled Saratoga water was shipped in growing quantities to customers well beyond the village. This Burleigh bird's-eye view shows the town as its visitors would have seen it, with hotels, cottages and park grounds arranged to serve the seasonal trade. Only three years earlier, in July 1885, former President Ulysses S. Grant had died at a cottage on Mount McGregor, north of town, and newspapers across the country followed his final months there. People who spent their summers in Saratoga knew it as a place where wealthy families and political figures mixed freely on the same verandas.
