Saratoga Springs in 1850 was already a famous resort town in upstate New York, built around its mineral springs, which visitors came from Eastern cities to drink and bathe in. The Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad, opened in 1832, had made the trip from Albany far quicker than the old stagecoach roads, and that link drew steady crowds of wealthy summer guests to the hotels along Broadway. Large hotels such as the United States and the Union were the center of social life, with dances, promenades and horse racing on nearby tracks. Beyond the resort trade, the town depended on its hotels, boarding houses and the services that fed and housed the seasonal population.
