Saratoga Springs in the early 1850s was a summer resort built around its mineral springs, which drew visitors who believed the waters eased dyspepsia and other ailments. The Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad, opened in 1832, had brought steady streams of travelers from New York City, Albany, and the South, and large hotels such as the United States Hotel filled each July and August. Wealthy guests, politicians, and gamblers mixed on the hotel porches and along Broadway, giving the village a reputation for fashion and nightlife that rivaled its medicinal fame. Year-round residents depended on the season for work as cooks, drivers, and shopkeepers, and many knew the town as much for its crowds and gaiety as for its water.
