Sandy Hill, a village in Washington County on the Hudson River in eastern New York, sat in a corridor of river traffic, canal boats, and mill power that shaped its work in 1884. The Champlain Canal, completed in the 1820s, ran through the region and linked the Hudson to Lake Champlain, which kept freight moving past the village's wharves and warehouses. Nearby falls and streams powered mills, and lumber, paper, and other manufacturing drew workers and their families to the local streets and churches. Residents of the time would have known Sandy Hill as a river and canal community whose fortunes rose and fell with the boats, the mills, and the rail lines that were then spreading across upstate New York.
