Skaneateles, New York, sat at the north end of the long, narrow lake that shares its name, in the Finger Lakes country of central New York. By 1884 the village drew its living from a mix of small manufacturing, farming on the surrounding hills, and trade with nearby Syracuse and Auburn, which were reached by rail. Its lake was already prized for clear water and summer cottages, and steamboats carried visitors up and down the shoreline during the warm months. Residents in that decade would have known the village as a quiet, prosperous lakeside community whose streets, churches, and mill buildings clustered along the lake's outlet. The bird's-eye view shows that settled town at a time when the Finger Lakes were growing into a regional destination for both work and leisure.
