New York in 1884 was a city of more than 1.2 million people, and its economy ran on the harbor, the garment shops, the cigar factories and the counting rooms of lower Manhattan. That fall the city became the center of national attention when Republican candidate James G. Blaine spoke at a meeting of Protestant clergymen at the Fifth Avenue Hotel, where a minister's remark about "Rum, Romanism and Rebellion" went unanswered by Blaine. Many Irish and German voters, along with other Catholics, took offense, and the remark is often cited as a factor in the close result in the state, which Grover Cleveland, the New York governor and Democratic nominee, carried. Uptown, the grand houses along Fifth Avenue and Madison Square drew the city's wealthy, while tenement families below Fourteenth Street stayed close to their jobs and their neighborhoods.
