Oneonta, in Otsego County in central New York, was a railroad town in 1884, shaped by the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company's rail lines that ran through the valley. The railroad brought freight, passengers, and steady work in its yards and shops, and it made the village a shipping point for the dairy farms, grain, and timber of the surrounding hills. Tanning, which drew on the hemlock forests of the Catskill and Allegheny foothills, was another large employer in the region. Residents of the period knew the village as a busy stop on the line between Albany and the Susquehanna Valley, and its growing population of mill hands, railroad men, and merchants kept its churches, schools, and stores busy.
