Oswego, New York, sat on the south shore of Lake Ontario in 1855, where the Oswego River meets the lake, and its fortunes rested on moving grain. Lake schooners carried wheat and corn to its docks, and the city's flour mills ground much of it for shipment east along the canal system. The Syracuse and Oswego Railroad gave the port a direct rail link inland, so the waterfront was busy with warehouses, wharves, and shipyards. Fort Ontario on the edge of town was a reminder that the harbor also served as a military post on the lakes. The city had roughly twenty thousand residents, and most of them depended on the docks, mills, and boats for their living.
