Oxford, New York, sat in the Chenango River valley of Chenango County in 1888, a village whose livelihood depended mainly on the farms around it. Dairy farming and cheese making were central to the county's economy in these decades, and milk and cheese moved out by rail to distant markets. The Chenango Canal, built in the 1830s, had once carried grain and freight up and down the valley, but by the late nineteenth century the railroad had taken over most of that trade. Residents would have known Oxford for its academy and its orderly streets, set among pastures and wooded hills.
