Carthage, New York, in Jefferson County, sat on the Black River in 1888, and its growth depended on the river's falls. Water power drove paper and other mills along the banks, and the village's economy leaned on that manufacturing as well as on farming and dairying in the surrounding towns. Watertown, the county seat, lay a short distance away, so Carthage residents traded, shipped goods, and kept close ties with that larger community. A bird's-eye view of the village in this year would have shown residents the mills, church spires, and streets they knew well, placed together in one sweeping look at their hometown.
