Luzerne, in Warren County, New York, sat on the Hudson River where the valley opens toward the Adirondack foothills in 1888. The surrounding country depended on river traffic, timber, and the mills and quarries that drew on the region's forests and stone. Rail lines running up the Hudson corridor carried those goods south toward Albany and Troy and brought summer visitors north toward the mountains. In the late 1880s, residents of small river towns like Luzerne measured their prospects by the lumber trade, the state of the river's shipping, and whether the railroad kept a stop nearby. A bird's-eye view of the village from that year shows the settlement as it looked to people who lived and worked along that stretch of water.
