Johnstown, the Fulton County seat in upstate New York, was in 1888 closely bound to the leather trade that had grown up across the surrounding hills. Its neighbor Gloversville, only a few miles off, produced a large share of the country's fine gloves, and Johnstown shared in that work through its glove shops, tanneries, and the skilled cutters and sewers who staffed them. Residents also took pride in Johnson Hall, the stone home that Sir William Johnson, the colonial superintendent of Indian affairs, built in the 1760s and that stood as the town's most important older landmark. Set against that industrial and historic background, the town's streets and church spires read as a community that had moved from frontier estate to manufacturing center within a century.
