Norwich, the seat of Chenango County in central New York, was a small manufacturing and trading town in 1908, sitting where the Chenango River meets the Canasawacta Creek. Its economy mixed factories with the surrounding dairy farms, which sent milk and produce to market through the town's rail connections. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad ran through the valley, tying Norwich to larger markets and bringing in shipments of coal, goods, and passengers. Residents knew the town for its county courthouse, its churches and schools, and its shops along the main commercial streets, where county business, farm trade, and factory work came together. Because the view is drawn from above, the streets, rail lines, and rooftops show how closely the business district, the river, and the hills around it were packed together.
