Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1874 was a village whose summer season was built on its mineral waters, and its wealthy visitors arrived by rail to take the baths and drink from the springs in Congress Park. The Saratoga Race Course, opened in 1864 under the sporting man John Morrissey, had by this time made the August meeting one of the country's fashionable events, drawing owners, bettors and spectators from New York and Philadelphia. Gambling houses and the gaming trade around the track kept the village's reputation as a place of pleasure, though the mood was often more lavish than respectable. Hotels such as the Grand Union, among the largest in the country, housed guests in numbers that made the town's postwar prosperity visible to anyone walking its streets.
