Plattsburgh, New York, sat on the western shore of Lake Champlain in 1877, the seat of Clinton County and a town that lived by the water and the rail line. Lake steamers and sailing vessels carried lumber, grain, and goods to and from the docks, while the Delaware & Hudson railroad tied the town to markets to the south. Residents still measured their local identity against the Battle of Plattsburgh in September 1814, when American naval and land forces turned back a British invasion, and the anniversary remained a point of civic pride. Mills, shops, and the courthouse made up the core of town life, and the streets of the 1870s reflected a community that was growing steadily but had not yet become a large city.
