Peekskill, New York, in 1911 was a Westchester County river town where Hudson River steamboats still called at the landing and the New York Central tracks along the east bank carried commuters and freight through the middle of town. The Peekskill Military Academy, founded in the nineteenth century, sent cadets into the local streets and gave the town a schoolboy presence that shaped its social calendar. Residents also depended on the waterfront and the rail line for work and trade, and many lived on the slopes above both. The bird's-eye map drawn that year shows a town still climbing its hills street by street, with houses filling blocks that had been open fields a generation earlier.
