Syracuse, New York, in 1868 was a fast-growing city built on salt, and the bird's-eye view shows the industrial and commercial core that salt and the railroads had created. Salt springs around the lake had made the town a center of production since the early 1800s, and by the late 1860s the Syracuse salt works, along with flour milling, iron, and machine shops, drew workers and capital. The Erie Canal and several rail lines met in the city, making it a busy transfer point for grain, coal, and manufactured goods moving across central New York. Syracuse had been incorporated as a city in 1847, and its population had climbed past 40,000 by the end of the decade, so residents would have known it as a rising commercial center still shaped by its brine springs.
