Granville, New York, in 1886 was a slate-quarrying town in Washington County, in the Slate Valley region near the Vermont line. Its economy rested on the quarries and the mills that cut, split, and shipped roofing and school-board slate, and the work drew many Welsh and Irish families to the village. Quarry crews, rail freight, and the mill yards shaped daily life, and residents knew the town as a center of the slate trade that supplied buildings across the country. Like many slate communities, Granville depended on the steady demand for its product, so local fortunes rose and fell with the quarry work and the freight that carried it out.
