Matteawan, a village on the east bank of the Hudson in Dutchess County, New York, lay just south of Fishkill Landing in 1886. Its economy rested on manufacturing, especially machine shops and textile mills that drew workers from the surrounding countryside. The Hudson River Railroad ran along the waterfront, carrying freight and passengers to New York City and north toward Albany, while ferries linked the shore to Newburgh across the river. Residents knew the place for its factories and for the wide river view below Mount Beacon, and in 1913 Matteawan would be merged with Fishkill Landing to form the city of Beacon.
