Chatham, New York, in 1886 was a farm village at the heart of Columbia County, where surrounding fields produced milk, hay, grain, and orchard fruit for markets beyond the valley. Its growth owed much to the railroads that crossed there, carrying farm goods and passengers toward Albany and the lines running east toward New England. Village life centered on its churches, schools, and stores along the main streets, while local officials handled road work and the upkeep of expanding streets. Residents knew Chatham as a trading point for the rolling country east of the Hudson, where the arrival of a train was a regular event in the day.
