Few 19th-century city views show the southern tip of Manhattan as clearly as a bird's-eye panorama does, with the harbor and waterfront laid out below the viewer. By 1873, the round fort on the Battery had been Castle Garden for nearly two decades, serving as a concert hall and then as the main landing depot for arriving immigrants. Lithographs like this were popular because they let viewers take in a crowded port city at a glance, its piers, ships, and streets seen from above. Look closely at the waterfront to see how much of the city's trade and arrival depended on the harbor.
