Andersonville, the Confederate prison in southwest Georgia formally called Camp Sumter, is the setting for this panoramic bird's-eye view, which shows the stockade from above as a vast enclosure packed with prisoners' shelters. Opened in February 1864, the camp held Union soldiers in conditions of severe overcrowding, poor sanitation and inadequate food, and more than 12,000 men died there before it closed in 1865. Views like this one, drawn from an elevated vantage point, were often produced for public audiences in the years after the war, and they remain among the most direct visual records of the camp's scale.
