Drawn from a raised vantage point to the south-east, this color lithograph shows the whole stockade at Andersonville, the Confederate prison camp in southwest Georgia where Union soldiers were held in 1864 and 1865. The camp's crowded enclosure, its interior layout, and the surrounding landscape are all laid out at once, which gives a sense of the scale of the site. The print was issued in 1890, a generation after the war, when Andersonville had become a symbol of the suffering of Union prisoners and of the debate over how the war should be remembered.
