Few pictures from the Peninsula campaign show a review interrupted by enemy fire, and this drawing captures that moment for Col. Charles K. Graham's regiment, the 5th Excelsior (officially the 74th New York), as Gen. Daniel Sickles looked on. Sickles had raised the Excelsior Brigade from New York volunteers in 1861, and the brigade served in the Army of the Potomac's advance up the peninsula toward Richmond in the spring and summer of 1862. Drawn in pencil and white body color on brown paper, the sheet pairs a scene of military ceremony with sudden danger, and it includes drummers among its subjects.
