The title names two generals and two sets of casualties, which places this lithograph in the fighting around Corinth, Mississippi, on October 3 and 4, 1862. Union forces under William S. Rosecrans held the railroad town against a Confederate assault led by Earl Van Dorn, and the attack ended in a Union victory. Kurz & Allison of Chicago, a firm known for battle scenes aimed at veterans and home audiences, issued this color print in 1891, nearly three decades after the engagement. Its copyright notice shows it was produced as a commercial art print rather than a contemporary record of the battle.
