Corinth, Mississippi, sat at the junction of two major railroads, which made it a prize for both armies in 1862. Confederate forces under Earl Van Dorn attacked the Union garrison there on October 3 and 4, and the Federals under William S. Rosecrans held the town. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive hand-colored prints of current events to a wide public, issued this lithograph within a few months of the fighting. Such prints gave northern households a quick, colorful account of battles they could only read about in newspapers.
