Baton Rouge, the Louisiana capital on the Mississippi, was the site of a Confederate attempt in early August 1862 to retake the city from its Union occupiers. Confederate troops under John C. Breckinridge attacked the Union garrison led by Brig. Gen. Thomas Williams, who was killed in the fighting, but the assault failed. The print was issued by Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for inexpensive hand-colored lithographs that brought news of the war into Northern homes.
