Crawford's Brigade, shown here making its charge on the right, fought at Cedar Mountain in Culpeper County, Virginia, on August 9, 1862. The battle pitted Nathaniel Banks's corps, part of John Pope's Army of Virginia, against a larger Confederate force under Stonewall Jackson. The print's caption describes the Union troops as greatly outnumbered, and the Confederates eventually drove them from the field. Issued as a hand-colored lithograph by Currier & Ives, the picture reflects the firm's wartime practice of producing quick, dramatic views of recent battles for a public eager for news.
