Hampton Roads, off Norfolk, Virginia, was the setting on March 9, 1862, when the Union ironclad Monitor met the Confederate Merrimac, the name this print uses for the ship the Confederates rebuilt as the ironclad Virginia. The day before, that ironclad had wrecked several wooden Union warships, and the Monitor arrived overnight to contest it. The two vessels fought to a standstill, the first battle between ironclad warships, and it reshaped naval design worldwide. This color lithograph was published by Kurz & Allison, a Chicago firm, in 1889, nearly three decades after the engagement.
