This hand-colored lithograph takes its title from the second fight at Bull Run, which took place on August 29, 1862, near Manassas, Virginia, on the same ground as the first battle a little over a year earlier. Union forces under Maj. Gen. John Pope were driven back by Robert E. Lee's army, with Stonewall Jackson's troops playing a central role, and the Federals retreated toward Washington. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued many inexpensive color prints of the war for a home audience, published the image, likely in 1862 given the bracketed date in its record. Such prints gave northern readers a quick visual account of battles whose outcomes were still being debated in the newspapers.
