Titled with the names of Gen. Irvin McDowell for the Federal side and Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard for the Confederate, this color lithograph depicts the first major clash of the Civil War, fought near Bull Run creek in Virginia on July 21, 1861. The Union attack on Confederate lines began well, but Confederate reinforcements arriving by rail turned the fight, and the retreating Federals fell back toward Washington in disorder. Published by Kurz & Allison, a Chicago firm known for dramatic battle chromolithographs, the print dates from around 1889 or 1890, nearly three decades after the battle, when popular interest in the war was still strong.
