The print centers on the death of Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson, commander of the Union Army of the Tennessee, who was killed on July 22, 1864, during the fighting around Atlanta. His death was a serious blow to Sherman's campaign, since McPherson was a respected officer and a former West Point top graduate. Chicago publisher Kurz & Allison issued this color lithograph in 1888, when Civil War battle scenes were popular for homes and public buildings. The work reflects the postwar interest in memorializing the Atlanta campaign and its fallen commanders.
