Dated to the morning of December 13, 1862, this color lithograph shows the Army of the Potomac crossing the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg, Virginia, under Generals Burnside, Sumner, Hooker, and Franklin, as the title records. The assault that followed against Confederate positions on the heights behind the town ended in a costly Union defeat, with more than 12,000 casualties. Kurz & Allison, an art publisher in Chicago, issued the print in 1888, when such colorful battle scenes were popular with a general audience more than two decades after the war.
